Exploring A Historical Fiction Drama

Item Details

Grades: 4, 5
Type: PDF

This is a free lesson that I completed with my Saturday school students where we merged both historical fiction with a drama, spring boarding off of various CCLS for literacy. During the week, my own fifth grade students were learning about the historical importance of the Battle of Trenton during the Revolutionary War so to help support that, I created this lesson taking an excerpt from a text on scholastic.com called "A Christmas Victory." If you are interested in the entire play, you can find it here: http://www.scholastic.com/teachers/sites/default/files/asset/file/tr_presplays.pdf

My students really enjoyed this lesson for many reasons including being able to act out the roles of the cast as well as the collaborative writing component. It's amazing how markers and chart paper really motivate children to write! The lesson also includes a Writing Guide Checklist based on the short response rubric aligned to the CCLS.
